Gaining traction on the Internet is very difficult for a small site of any sort. Music is a particularly difficult area since there are so many fine music-focused destinations.
There are general sites such as Wikipedia, YouTube (on which TDMB of course relies) and DailyMotion as well as all the terrific music-specific sites such as AllMusic. There are others that focus more fully on the actual presentation of the music and social networking, such as MySpace.
All of those in their own way are akin to Home Depot: They have everything. But they are huge and an individual is more or less on his or her own to find what they want. They also are not very good at helping visitors discover new genres.
TDMB is sort of like a neighborhood hardware store in this analogy. We don’t have nearly as much, but we are there to help and make suggestions. And, believe me, we are very grateful when you stop by.
In an effort to increase the number of email subscriptions, I am announcing The Daily Music Break Subscription Contest. Each month, I will give two $25 electronic or physical gift certificate to new subscribers. The certificates will be to a music-related online or physical store or storefront of the winners’ choice. Welcome to most of my marketing budget. The newsletters — we have one weekly and one about three times per week — of course are free.
For the first month, I will enter all the existing subscribers, since they all already have done what I am asking the new subscribers to do. Also, please let me know if you get TDMB’s RSS feed and I will enter you as well. I am having trouble with the feed and am not even sure it is working correctly. I haven’t decided how I will determine the winners, but it will be fair.
Please use the bar at the top of the page, the popup with Leonard Bernstein’s picture or this email to subscribe. The monthly deadline is midnight of the last day of the previous month.
Thanks, Carl
