Cable television executives have a rule of thumb that has served them well: Expect 20 percent of pay-per-view and video-on-demand titles — the hot recent movies, mostly — to generate 80 percent of revenue. The takeaway is that even good content has a short shelf life.
I was thinking about the “80/20 rule” as the number of posts at TDMB crossed the 800 mark. My fear is that some of great music that was posted early in the life of the site won’t get any traffic, like that 80 percent of on-demand content to which few people pay attention.
Luckily, the solution is fairly simple: Periodically re-post earlier content.
This month the site takes a look back at the music that was posted during March of 2012, the first full month that the TDMB was on the Web. Below left are links to many posts that ran. On the right is a playlist of the other artists and their songs. The distinction — playlist or links — was arbitrary. There is equally great music in both.
