Art Blakey: “Moanin'”

Last week, I posted a video on the Steely Dan song “Deacon Blues by a fellow named Nerdwriter (hopefully, not his real name). He wrote that an element in the band’s distinctive sound is a result of a unique production technique. The band, he wrote, took a cue from famous jazz producer Rudy Van Gelder. Van Gelder, he wrote, had the horn players stand very close to the microphones. That gave an immediate and deep resonance to the sound. The example Nerdwriter gave was the great drummer Art Blakey’s “Moanin.’ ”

Here is more on Van Gelder who, according to Wikipedia, is 91 years old.
