Tony! Toni! Toné!: “Thinking of You” and “If I Had No Loot”

Tony! Toni! Toné! was a pretty big R&B band back in the 1990s. I hadn’t paid much attention, except for thinking that it seemed to be a pretty bad name for a musical group.

After hearing the terrific “Thinking of You” in the car the other day, I listened to some of the band’s other songs and found Tony! Toni! Toné! was really good.

The group, whose original members were from Oakland, was popular in the late 1980s and 1990s. The mainstays early on were brothers Dwayne (vocals and guitar) and Charles Ray Wiggins (lead vocals and bass). Cousin Timothy Christian Riley played drums and keyboards. There were several other members, including Amar Khalil, who is the current lead singer.

Charles Ray Wiggins changed his name to Raphael Saadiq. He left the band and had a hit with the song “Ask of You,” which was on the soundtrack of the movie “Higher Learning.” He became an R & B producer and had hits for D’Angelo, The Roots and others.

Above is “Thinking of You” and below is “If I Had No Loot.”
